One heck of a ball!
published: Friday | November 11, 2005

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

These ladies let it all hang out as they couldn't resist boogeying to the music of Fab 5, at the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Grand Charity Ball - 'Glitter, Glamour & Gold', held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston, on Saturday. - WINSTON SILL/FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER

IT WAS a little over a month ago that Sameer Younis said to members of the fourth estate, "November 5 is our thing."

By thing, he meant the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Charity Ball, and as chairman of the civic affairs committee, he was spreading the word.

And so it was at the date prophesied, it was time again for the ball of balls; the most popular one not held on the eve of New Year. The socialites flocked by the carfuls to the home of the JCC Ball - the Pegasus - for another night of partying until the sun spun its way back to our side of the world.

The balladeer Floyd Folkes produced his musical gems again before the band anointed as the Fabulous Five played for all and sundry. In cabaret, the lovely Diamara wowed them with her voice, including the women's anthem, I Will Survive.

Yea, it was an evening for the princesses and queens of the social stratum to don their best garb as they knew the cameras would be flashing and they gave the photographers much work to do. Ball gowns that required an arm and a leg (as well as maybe a kidney or two) clung majestically to the bodies who wore them as they sauntered down the red carpet; Hollywood style.

But make no mistake, guests do not only to come to this shindig to drink elegant wines and model. They came to dance for as long as their legs could support them or until Fab Five ran out of songs; whichever happened first. Whether it was the clock-like motion of waistlines to the soca music; the cool movements from rock steady or the swinging steps of ska music; the couples and those without partners danced until Sunday morning.

Proceeds from the ball will go to the JCC's Inner- City Development Committee, the Jamaica Christian Boys Home and the Special Olympics Association.
