MoBay man killed after attacking cop
published: Friday | November 11, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

A 42-YEAR-OLD man, who was caught breaking into a basic school in Pitfour, Montego Bay, on Tuesday, was fatally shot when he allegedly attacked a policeman with a machete.

The dead man has been identified as Cleveland Lothain, also known as 'Lumbie', of Granville in St. James.

Reports are that at 2:45 a.m., residents alerted the Granville police and informed them that a break-in was in progress at the Hilltop Basic School.

On their arrival, Lothain was seen in a classroom and when he saw the lawmen, he ran. However he was accosted and, at that time, he allegedly used a machete to chop at a policeman.

Lothain was shot twice and later succumbed to his injuries at hospital. A length of steel, a spring blade, two knives and a slingshot were also found in his possession.

It was also discovered that the window to the school, adjoining a church, was forced open and a section of the grill dismantled.

The Bureau of Special Investigation is probing the incident.

Police say Lothain had been convicted of assault occasioning bodily harm and had been charged for sacrilege in the past.
