Sixth formers get scholarships

SIX OF the seven students who received government scholarships this year based on their performance in the GCE A'Level/CAPE examinations, are from Campion College.

The nnual Jamaica Scholarships are offered by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.

The students are:

Garnett Spencer - Munro College, Jamaica Scholarship (male).

Joy-Ann Tabanor - Campion College, Jamaica Scholarship (female).

David Walcott - Campion College, Jamaica Independence Open.

Renée Armstrong - Campion College, Jamaica Independence (female).

Michael Waul - Campion College, Jamaica Independence (male).

Navin Suckoo - Campion College, Jamaica Adult Suffrage.

Machell Lee - Campion College, Jamaica Centenary (female).

SELECTION CRITERIA

All scholarships cover the tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of $60,000 and a book allowance of $115,000. Students who have obtained the scholarship cannot change their course of study without prior approval from the ministry, and may not hold another scholarship or award, without permission from the ministry.

The criteria for selection of the awardees include: academic ability, extra-curricular activities, communication skills, personality and evidence of leadership qualities, financial need and relevance of the selected programme of study to the country's needs.

All awardees are bonded to work with the Jamaican government or any local organisation approved by the ministry for a period stipulated by the Cabinet Office.
