Dirty cops drive crime says politician
published: Friday | November 11, 2005

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

A SENIOR government minister in Trinidad and Tobago has fingered "dirty cops" in T&T's police service as being major contributors to crime in the country.

In his contribution to the crime debate in Parliament on Wednesday, Housing Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, said there were "miscreants" who demoralise the hard working officers and that because of them there was a breakdown of trust between the police force and citizens.

Dr. Rowley said, "We have to actively weed out those who fall short in the police service. The culture today is different and that is what the police have to deal with. We glorify lawlessness," he said.

The government minister then criticised the judicial system saying, "When you go to the courts, the criminals have more rights than the victims and law-abiding citizens."
