IT WAS two days of work by day and lots of fun by night for the chairmen or their nominees from the St. John Association around the Caribbean when the delegates met at the recent regional conference, hosted for the first time in Jamaica.
Representatives from the international organisation in the United Kingdom sat with those from Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Barbados, Bermuda and Jamaica at an all-day session at the Courtleigh Hotel last Friday where they looked at such issues as linkage with other national emergency organisations; additional role of the organisation, recruitment and training needs. The conference was officially opened by the Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, president of the St. John National Council of Jamaica.
ST. JOHN'S ROLE
Dr. Marion Bullock DuCasse, chairperson of the Medical Health and Anti-Doping Directorate of the ICC/Cricket World Cup 2007, addressed the group on the role St. John will have to play as volunteers for the event. She invited St. John to serve as a member of the Consultative Group Medical, Health and Anti-Doping Directorate and to train volunteers in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Safety Services and Emergency and Non-Emergency Ambulance transport.
With business out of the way, that evening the delegates headed off to King's House, where the Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, hosted them to an evening of sumptuous hors d'oeuvres and good music by Kathy Brown and Company.
But it was back to work on Saturday morning to brainstorm at a workshop on capacity building, then on to the Philip Sherlock Centre for a cultural experience.
