Marshall sees red as LA lose
published: Monday | October 17, 2005

MARSHALL

CARSON, California, CMC;

JAMAICAN DEFENDER Tyrone Marshall was sent off early in the first half and his team Los Angeles Galaxy slumped to a 3-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes as the two teams ended their regular season in US Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday night.

San Jose Earthquakes put the finishing touches on their best ever regular season with the victory, achieved through goals from Mark Chung, Dwayne De Rosario and Brian Mullan at The Depot Centre.

The result gives the Quakes an 18-4-10 mark and sets up a rematch next week in Carson as the first-place San Jose play the fourth-place Galaxy in the Western Conference Semi-final Series.

Marshall was sent off on 17 minutes for "violent conduct".

Earthquakes forward Alejandro Moreno went down near midfield after getting tangled up with Marshall.

"With Moreno on the pitch, Marshall stepped on Moreno. Referee Jair Marrufo immediately pulled out a red card and sent off the Jamaican international," the MLS web site report on the match said.

Marshall was one of three Jamaica internationals sent off in various leagues over the weekend, as Ricardo Gardner was sent off for Bolton Wanderers while they crashed to a 5-1 loss to Chelsea in the English Premier League and Millwall's Barry Hayles was also red-carded as his side faced Norwich in the English League Championship.

At Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution, with Grenada's Shalrie Joseph and Khano Smith, of Bermuda, beat Chicago Fire 1-0 on a Taylor Twellman goal in the 35th minute.

Trinidad and Tobago's Avery John was on the bench for the Revs.

In other games, the Columbus Crew and DC United drew 2-2 and there was also a 2-2 result between FC Dallas and Kansas City Wizards.

Trinidad and Tobago's Scott Sealy came on as a 73rd minute substitute for the Wizards, who had Jamaican Shavar Thomas on the bench.
