Art! ... in the midst of death ...
published: Monday | October 17, 2005

THE EDITOR, SIR:

IN THE midst of the overwhelming violence and destruction of human lives, art continues to thrive - pointing us to beauty, reflection and introspection. Though quite exhausted from a gruelling work day, I opted to attend Stella Maris' 'Yebo II' on Friday night. I left the programme uplifted, inspired and soothed.

I am an optimist but I have been quite saddened and heavy-hearted over the past month because of the horrific murders that have taken place. Thoughts of how Jamaica can be freed from this situation have been constantly on my mind. But 'Yebo II' gave me some reprieve.

REFLECTING ON BEAUTY

The Stella Maris dancers gave me the opportunity to reflect on the wonderful acts of beauty that continue to proliferate in our land everyday. Moreso, despite the lack of large endowments, to support the arts in Jamaica, dedicated, creative people have persevered in realising opportunities for themselves to dance, paint, draw, act, sing, sculpt. Opportunities, which are there for all to enjoy, bask in and be refreshed by. Thank God for the artists. Thank you Stella Maris.

I was particularly refreshed by the elegant duet done to Jimmy Cliff's Rebel in me, entertained by the witty representation of Michael Jackson through the years, and delighted by the fresh interpretations of Kumina.

It was beautiful. And God knows we need to immerse ourselves in beauty right now. So please dance on.

I am etc.,

KLAO BELL LEWIS
