When Flair started 21 years ago, the four women featured were: singer Nadine Sutherland, newscaster Erica Allen, model Jheanell Azan and former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare. Flair asked Nadine Sutherland to speak about how she has evolved through the years.
On October 16, 1984, the first issue of Flair magazine filled a void in the lives of Jamaican women.
In that issue they were introduced to the 16-year-old teen star who today needs no introduction, Nadine Sutherland.
Twenty-one years later, Sutherland is still in the limelight. She has evolved into a staple in the entertainment industry. She is the face of Supligen energy drink, and one of the judges of Digicel's popular talent show, Rising Stars. She notes that Rising Stars has provided the perfect opportunity for people to really get to know the real Nadine.
At 16 she was described as shy, but now Sutherland notes, "As I grew older I became more assertive. I respect the life that God has given me but there's still so much to do. I'm still a work in progress."
As with all celebrities, her life is under constant scrutiny. Sutherland notes that she has learnt to deal with it. "I live in a realm where I'm not affected by fame. I've learnt to manage it so that I can survive. When you're famous you're a commodity for them (the general public) so I resign myself to my selected group of friends and family."
