KIRK PATRICK scored a brace for Real Mona as they edged past Central Kingston 2-1 and secured a second-round berth in the 2005 Western Union/Jackie Bell KSAFA Knockout competition.
In the game played at Buttercup Park, Patrick's strikes came in the 10th and 65th minutes. Rohan Fray scored Central Kingston's lone goal in the 60th.
It was a evenly contest game as both teams had good chances to score but on most occasions poor shooting and selfishness came out the spoiler.
Real Mona's coach, Errol Gardener, said it was a good fight for his team.
"We scored early and they showed determination and equalised, but we came back and showed guts," Gardener said.
He said Central Kingston played their normal running game, a ploy he expected.
"We played a more tactical game as we utilised the flanks of the field, which we realised where they were vulnerable and we just took it from there," he said.
Losing coach Craig Butler said his team should have won.
He said it was difficult to lose "when you have 70 per cent of the possession of the ball and played a much better game".
However, at the same time, he said he wasn't taking anything away from Mona.
"We have to hand it to Mona, they came out and scored their goals, we had many, many opportunities which we need to capitalise on and we will be training and working on our finishing," Butler said.
Meanwhile, at Constant Spring playfield, Police National beat Rockfort 4-3 on penalties, this after playing to 0-0 in regulation.
