Backward move

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE LATEST news that Air Jamaica Express has now suspended its operations with no firm statement about its future, is yet another major cause for concern. I don't know of any progressive country which cannot support a viable (small) domestic carrier. I think the decision is a backward move, reminiscent of the decision to cease operation of the country's rail service some years ago. Does anyone at the helm really plan ahead, considering the national interest?
I am sure with careful management Air Jamaica Express can survive. Quite often one has to think within one's limits and live within one's means. Air Jamaica Express has been flying to neighbouring small islands, was this really necessary? And did the market really support it? A small domestic carrier should remain 'small' and by all means domestic! It was once so easy to get around the island by air for business and pleasure, or simply for quick one-day trips for whatever reason. The carrier served both locals and tourists. I was so disappointed when Negril was abruptly removed from their route network some years ago.
I think those responsible should go back to the drawing board and do what they can to revive this small carrier, keeping it local and connecting major points across the island. The airline should be managed by people within the industry who are already familiar with the underlying issues of the domestic travel market.
I am, etc.,
