Powell in fine form
published: Monday | September 12, 2005

POWELL

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC:

TRINIDAD AND Tobago and West Indies middle-order batsman Ricardo Powell turned in a fine allround performance to lead Denesh Ramdin's X1 to a 22-run win against a Daren Ganga's side in the final game of the three-match Toyota Classic series yesterday.

Jamaica-born Powell lashed a robust 47 at a run-a-ball rate, with four fours and two sixes as Ramdin's team ended on 198 for five in the contest that was reduced to 35 overs-a-side because of a wet outfield at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) Ground.

Powell received good support from skipper Ramdin, who stroked 46 off 42 balls with one four, and Gregory Mahabir an unbeaten 45 from 40 deliveries with two sixes.

Top bowlers for Ganga's team were left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed with two for 26 and pacer Rayad Emrit two for 36.

In reply, Ganga's XI, already assured of the Toyota trophy after winning the first two matches, were dismissed for 176 in 33.2 overs.

T&T Under-19 batsman William Perkins top-scored with 36, fashioned with six boun-daries, while the in-form Lendl Simmons contributed 30.

The chief wicket-taker for the Ramdin-led team was former West Indies Under-15 captain Davindra Krishna with three for 29.

He was well supported by Powell with two for 15, and West Indies fast bowler Mervyn Dillon (2-27).

The T&T squad for the President's Trophy series to be played next month in Barbados and Guyana will be announced today.
