Street light woes irk St Elizabeth councillors
published: Monday | September 12, 2005

THE JAMAICA Public Service Company came in for heavy criticism from councillors of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council. The councillors cited that the current street light installation programme across the parish needs to be arranged to meet the needs of the residents.

People's National Party Councillor for the Myersville Division, Winston Sinclair, told the monthly meeting of the council, held at the council's chamber in Black River, that 50 per cent of the street lights that were installed in his division are not working. He said that the situation is such that it gives the impression that no lights were installed in the district. The meeting took place on Thursday, September 8.

"The situation is the same in my division. I need to know exactly what the JPS contractors are doing," said JLP Councillor for Malvern division, Donald Simpson.

Mr. Simpson said the contractors got a lot of time to complete the installation, but even up to this moment, they are yet to finalise the work.

PNP Councillor for the Balaclava division, Rodney Barnes, said that seven of the 23 street lights that were installed in his division have not been working for more than two months and nothing has been done about the matter.

"I am upset because I expected a better service delivery from the JPS," said Councillor Barnes. He said the company should see it as an emergency and have the light fixed properly as the district was still in darkness.

No members of the JPS district office was present at the meeting when the matter was being discussed. According to the councillors, similar problems were also been experienced in the Southfield, Mountainside, Siloah and Brompton Divisions.
