HUTCHINSON
ST. ELIZABETH:
MEMBER OF Parliament for North West St. Elizabeth J.C. Hutchinson, who was warned on Tuesday of prosecution during the islandwide demonstration has been officially charged.
On September 9, Mr. Hutchinson was served with three summonses charging him for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and breaches of the Solid Waste Management Act (formerly the Anti-Litter Act) and he is scheduled to appear in the Black River Resident Magistrate Court on Wednesday, September 14.
Mr. Hutchinson's charges arose out of an incident which occurred along the Lacovia main road during Tuesday's JLP islandwide demonstration.
The police reported that at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Mr. Hutchinson and a group of protesters were observed setting up roadblocks along a section of the Lacovia main road in St. Elizabeth. Upon the approach of the police, Mr. Hutchinson, who was identified as the leader of the group, was instructed to remove the roadblocks but refused. The police then attempted to arrest him but were prevented from doing so by the protesters who had converged on the scene.
Deputy Supt. in charge of operations in St. Elizabeth, Maurice Robinson, then warned Mr. Hutchinson that he would be prosecuted. The police also seized Mr. Hutchinson's licensed firearm.
Since Tuesday's incident, Mr. Hutchinson had instructed his lawyers to proceed with a lawsuit against the Deputy Supt. Maurice Robinson for assault.
