THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE this letter specifically to say thanks and to 'big up' the firefighters from the Brown's Town Fire Station in St. Ann. On Monday, August 22, 2005, the district of Ebenezer, roughly 11 miles from Brown's Town, St. Ann, experienced a thunderstorm that was like nothing we had ever experienced before.
There was lightning and thunder seemingly everywhere. Suddenly we saw a family running towards my home screaming that fire was in their yard. We looked and saw fire blazing along the ground and another huge fire a few yards from that one. A little further off a ball of fire was blazing from a light pole - all perilously close to surrounding houses and a church. The entire area seemed threatened.
Frantic calls were made to the Jamaica Public Service, the fire station and the police. In what seemed to be less than 15 minutes, the Fire Brigade from Brown's Town arrived, followed by JPS personnel who turned off the power, thus averting what threatened to be a major disaster.
We congratulated the men on the spot, but feel that they should be lauded publicly for their quick response. Thanks too, to the JPS workers who have since repaired the wires and restored power to the area.
I am, etc.,
