Contenders should read Clinton's book
published: Monday | September 12, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS SOME of Jamaica's brightest and best vie for the presidency of the People's National Party and potential prime minister of Jamaica, I suggest all the candidates read the 957-page autobiographical work of former United States president Bill Clinton, titled My Life. From cover to cover that great opus magnum from a great man and America's greatest president ever (in my opinion) is full of lessons for leaders who would lead well.

Delving deeply into politics, world economics, American history and nearly every topic under the sun, President Clinton made race relations and upliftment of the welfare of black people major issues in his smoothly flowing life story. Clinton gave valuable insights into the heart and head of the most powerful world leader and skilfully showed readers the inside workings of American politics as it related to the entire globe, including the Caribbean.

DEALING WITH ISSUES

Humour and self-deprecation were woven into every chapter as the former president dealt candidly with personal and professional issues, including his weaknesses, impeachment and secrets to success. It must be remembered that the Bill Clinton presidency was responsible for the most economically prosperous times in U.S. history and one of the most peaceful times in the world. The importance of how one person under such immense hatred from his political opponents could render such great leadership should not be lost on would-be Jamaican leaders.

All the male contenders for the PNP presidency will benefit from sitting at Clinton's feet by reading his book. Portia Simpson Miller would also benefit not only from tapping Bill Clinton's expertise but also from reading about the political skills of Hilary Clinton, who I hope will be the next president of the USA.
