LETTER OF THE DAY - Opposition did the right thing
published: Monday | September 12, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA IS a place that I love dearly, but the last 15 years in our country's history are some of the worst times that I've seen in my whole life. It seems that the persons we have elected to steer the country in a way that life would be better for all the citizens, have some form of economic stability, an education for all, proper health care for all, and security for all its citizens, lack the leadership qualities to run a small population of 2.7 million people, or they don't have a clue.

Jamaica, it is time to wake up and see the light. We need to stop voting because we love PNP or JLP or any other political party, and start voting for people that will lead the country effectively, so you and your family will benefit. Jamaica, it is time to stand up and let your voice be heard peacefully, or you can sit back and let the mismanagement of our country continue. Any debt that any government accumulates will affect you, your children, your grandchildren and generations to come.

THE CRIES OF THE PEOPLE

I thought that the Opposition did the right thing on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, by letting the Government hear the cries of the people through them; that's what they are there for. Some people may not like it, but each time things like this happen, we hear how much the country lost because of the protest. Question (1) Have any of you who are saying the protest was bad for business, ever been through what some of those people have gone through and are still going through, because of what this Government has put them through the last 15 years? (2) Can somebody show me what this Government is talking about when they say that the economy is growing? There are so many questions that I would like to ask.

The way forward will be a long, hard road, but we have to start from now. First we must educate our people from a tender age. By doing so we will attract investors. The more investors we attract the more jobs will be created. When people have jobs that will allow them to support them and their families, less time will be spent thinking on how to commit a crime. That will definitely reduce our outrageous crime rate, and having a low crime rate means that more people will want to come to our shores, meaning tourists. Then we can start focusing on other areas like health, security, inner-city communities etc.

I am, etc.,
