Dolphin Cove bats for education
published: Monday | September 12, 2005

SAYING HE wanted St. Ann students to start the new school term with "some of the necessary tools that will enhance performance", Dolphin Cove's owner Stafford Burrows last week donated over 2,000 hard cover books and supplies to schools throughout he parish.

"We took the decision based on what we see as a genuine need on the part of many of our students," Mr. Burrows said. "What we actually did was to ask the students to give us a list of the things they need and we accommodate the requests as best as we could. We chose the schools randomly ... we did our best to give as many as we could assistance ... regrettably we had to leave some out."

He said that Dolphin Cove was a firm believer in education, adding that "whatever it is that we can can do to assist in uplifting the minds of students, we will never refrain from doing it." He noted that ever since the attraction came on stream over four years ago, "we have always been opening our doors to accommodate young children."

FAVOURITE WITH CRUISE SHIPS

Dolphin Cove, a 'swimming with the dolphins' facility, is located in Ocho Rios next door to Dunn's River Falls. The attraction, in a very short time, has grown in popularity where it is now a favourite with cruiseship passengers and hotel visitors.

Mr. Burrows said he was very concerned over what he said were a lot of young children roaming the streets and without direction.

"It pains me greatly to see a lot of youngsters on the streets and who should all be in school," he said. "We all have to ensure that we do our part in assisting where we can. The parents too have a responsibility in ensuring that these kids are enrolled in school. It goes without saying that there is no substitute for education and we must all remember that a mind is a terrible thing to waste."
