A NEW champion will be crowned in the Capital and Credit Limited-Overs cricket competition following the elimination of St. Catherine C.C. yesterday

St. Catherine, who lost to Manchester yesterday cannot qualify from group C behind Manchester, as St. Thomas, with a game in hand against Portland at Goodyear Oval today, can count themselves in.

By virtue of beating St. Catherine, St. Thomas, even if they lose to Portland today, will advance with the use of a head-to-head decision.

SAINTS DISMISSED

Yesterday, St. Catherine CC, chasing 195 made by Manchester, were dismissed for 157 as Andre Dwyer (3-27) and Donavan Sinclair (2-22) combined in ensuring that only three batsmen (Renford Pinnock Jnr., 27, Dean Morgan, 25, and Odean Brown, 12) reached double figures.

Earlier, Sinclair made an even 50 in Manchester's 195-7 off 44 overs. He received support from Matthew Sinclair (37) and David Powell (34). Odean Brown, 3-40, and Jermaine Lawson, 2-35, were St. Catherine's best bowlers.

At Kensington Park, Kensington had a 10-wicket win over St. Catherine Parish. After rain had reduced the game to 35 overs a side, St. Catherine, who arrived with only eight players batted first made 93-8 off 28.5 overs.

Rajiv Chartie (20), Brenton Beckford (12), Kemar Issacs (13) and Jermaine Gordon (10) were the only batsmen into double figures as Daren Powell and Dennis Bulli claimed two wickets each.

Hugh Hinds (47 not out) and Ranville Brown (44 not out) put together 97 in leading Kensington home in 24.5 overs.

RAIN RUINS PLAY

At Elgin Town, Lucas beat Hanover without facing a ball. After water seeped on to the pitch due to overnight rain, the game was reduced to 33 overs per side. Lucas were awarded the toss and 60 penalty runs.

Sent to bat, the home team got up to 58-8 when the rain came. Under the Duckworth/Lewis system Lucas won the game by 10 wickets.

At Collie Smith Drive, Boys' Town lost to St Elizabeth by nine wickets. Rain reduced the game to 25 overs per side. Boys' Town made 82-8 in their allotted overs. Terry Staple top scored with 34 against Conroy Miller who took two for nine.

In reply, St. Elizabeth made 86-1 off 14.3 overs. Dalenton Campbell (44 not out) and Shane Powell (26) got the runs.

At Kaiser, Melbourne beat St. Ann by six wickets. St. Ann batted first and made 135 for nine in 41 overs with Miguel Carty (54) top scoring against the bowling of Ramon Hutchinson who bagged 6-26. In reply, Marlon Samuels (62 not out ) and Carlton Baugh Jnr. (35) put on 78 for the fourth wicket to rescue Melbourne from 32-3 as the Kangaroos made 139-4 off 36.5 overs. Marlondo Walters, with two for 20, was the best St. Ann bowler.

CLARENDON BEAT JDF

At Jamalco, Clarendon beat the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) by 22 runs. In the 35 overs per side affair, due to rain, Clarendon batted first and made 154-7. National Under-19 batsman Albert Gopie led the way with 57 while Dwayne Mahabeer (35) and Jaypaul Powell (22) supported well against Omar Lydney's 2-35. In reply, JDF fell for 132 in 29.4 overs as Gopie bagged 4-31.

At Bounty Hall, Trelawny beat Westmoreland by 87 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis system. Trelawny batted first and made 217-7 in 48.3 overs (Carlington Cunningham 56 and Cordell Simpson 49). Rain intervention saw Westmoreland being asked to get 195 off 36 overs. They crumbled for 108 in 23 overs as Phillip Service, Kemal Allen and Oshane Spence all got three wickets. Myron Wilson made 46 for Westmoreland.

NO SHOW FOR ST JAMES

The game between Kingston and St. Andrew and St. James was not played as St. James did not turn up.

St. James said they got a call from the hosts stating that it was raining heavily at Maxfield Park and it would make little sense to turn up. They aborted their journey and got only a point which in effect means they miss out on a spot in the quarter-finals.

A win would have seen the net run rate called into action as they would have been level with St. Ann and St. Mary.

The teams advancing are: Group A - Kingston and the JDF. Group B: Kensington, Police and Lucas (all on 12 points - net run rate will decide). Group C Manchester, St. Thomas

Group D: Melbourne and St. Ann.
