THE STATE-RUN National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has shelved plans to effectively operate a solid waste disposal site at Church Corner, St. Thomas.
The decision was revealed in a letter addressed to the St. Thomas Parish Council, which made the contents public during the council's monthly meeting last Thursday.
The community, as well as several councillors, reacted with glee to this decision as they had long opposed the operation of a solid waste disposal site at that location.
SORE POINT
The matter had been a sore point ever since the idea was first broached, and a significant amount of waste material was deposited near residents' premises. The residents, at that time, had been very vocal in their objections to the site, which they claimed was established without any prior dialogue with them or their local representatives.
In the letter, the new Executive Chairman Errol Greene said, among other things, that the NSWMA will very shortly be making arrangements to settle the matter of the Portland depository and while that is being sorted out, the Church Corner location may have to continue to accommodate the waste. But, the letter said, that practice will soon cease.
