THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON WEDNESDAY, May 25, several Jamaicans assembled at various parts of this island. That was a show of solidarity, demonstrating against crime and violence, specifically. It was commendable, for it signified the stirring of our conscience, and the deep agonising national heart-cry for positive change.
However, let us go far beyond just having our conscience stirred, and resolutely seek to embrace ultimate power for all the desired changes in Jamaica. Let us go, therefore, for the real thing, as have Fiji Islands, since 2003, and earlier Uganda, in Africa.
Amazing, astounding, miraculous, incredible, wonderful are some words used to describe the transformation, still continuing in those nations. They demonstrated the humility and courage to test the biblical example of Nineveh, and proved that it works.
Unless or until all and sundry, especially political, church, public sector and private sector leaders follow such examples of declaring publicly and clearly, admission to personal acts of evil (sins) and through repentance, seek God's forgiveness, it is an absolute certainty, that violence, crime, unspeakable cruelty and wickedness will continue more blatantly, to surpass excruciating. Worse!
Humbly consider, quickly, therefore, this suggestion, as to method. During August 2005, close down all activities (except essential services) and assemble in churches, in the streets, stadium, national arena, in schools etc. for fasting and prayer, from 8:00 am to about 4:00 pm:
1) All parishes, in the county of Cornwall, on Monday
2) All parishes in the county of Middlesex on Tuesday following
3) All parishes in the county of Surrey on Wednesday following
4) All parishes in Jamaica, on Thursday following,
Have we not, over several years tried so many approaches, yet with very insignificant success? Why not try the biblical method of Nineveh, approved by God Himself, as have been tried by Uganda, Fiji Islands and others, who are still reaping indisputable overall successes?
I am, etc.,
