WIPA states case on SL tour
published: Friday | June 24, 2005

THE WEST Indies Players' Association (WIPA) president/CEO Dinanath Ramnarine remains in a militant mood towards the regional team's tour of Sri Lanka.

In a statement released yesterday, the controversial president made several demands and stated next month's tour would hang on those issues.

They include:

Both WICB and WIPA agree to binding arbitration set for a fixed date of all issues and questions either party may have.

Clause 5 of the present match/tour contract be adjudicated by Justice Saunders at a date and time to be agreed and in the event of the board being in breach in its present match/tour contract to Sri Lanka then the board shall compensate the players at a rate agreed or by further negotiation to settle the matter.

The players' sponsorship fee for the Sri Lanka tour to be negotiated and agreed between the WICB and WIPA on or before Monday, 27th June.

In the release, WIPA said this approach would not only ensure the Sri Lanka tour, but clear the way for future developments.

The organisation also stated it believes that the WICB has rejected its proposal but has indicated that it (proposal) will be sent to their legal counsel.

WIPA said they are open to further meetings, even at this late stage, "to find any common ground and negotiated resolution in the interest of West Indies cricket".

The WICB had earlier said the match/tour contract was sent to WIPA, which did not reply.

"The Board had made every attempt to avoid this by submitting the match/tour contract to WIPA on June 2 but there was no response by WIPA," WICB chief executive officer Roger Brathwaite said.

However, the WIPA release denied this by saying, "WIPA's CEO Ramnarine did respond verbally and by e-mail of June 9 and June 13, 2005 to Brathwaite's letter, dated June 2, 2005 on the issue of the match/tour contracts."

It is believed only three West Indian players have signed the WICB's tour contract.
