Tyrone Reid, Staff ReporterTHE Board of the Immaculate Conception High School, which lately has been in a quagmire of controversy, will be meeting with the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) to settle the unrest at
the school.
"The union (JTA) and the board are to meet early this week to see if they can resolve the impasse," said a teacher from the institution who requested anonymity.
A few weeks ago, three students
conspired and spat into a teacher's water bottle. During class, one of the girls distracted the teacher, the other spat in the bottle while the next girl shook the bottle to disguise the saliva.
The board met and decided to suspend the young ladies. However, the situation boiled over on Wednesday, as livid,
placard-bearing teachers protested that the actions of the students warranted expulsion.
TEACHERS NOT DOING THEIR JOBS
Peeved parents, who called The Sunday Gleaner, lamented that the teachers have not been doing their jobs since the incident and demanded that the students be removed so that other children can be taught.
The teacher who spoke with The Sunday Gleaner admitted that some teachers have resorted to a go-slow regime, especially when dealing with the class with the girls who committed the act.
The teachers are adamant that the students should be expelled or be advised by the board to voluntarily withdraw from the school.
"The teachers are serious about getting the situation reversed. You can't have students spitting in teachers' water and it is business as usual," The Sunday Gleaner source said.
Efforts to speak with the acting principal or vice-principal were unsuccessful. During one attempt, The Sunday Gleaner's telephone call was put on hold and no one returned for nearly an hour.
