Ja squad chosen for SA clash
published: Wednesday | April 27, 2005

THE JAMAICA Cricket Asso-ciation (JCA) has released a 13-man squad to face South Africa in a one-day practice match at Chedwin Park next Thursday.

The 50-over-a-side contest, a warm-up for the South Africans before they tackle the West Indies in back-to-back one-dayers at Sabina Park on Saturday and Sunday, is expected to start at 9:30 a.m. Admission is $200.

Although the selectors, headed by chairman Ruddy Williams, have a diminished pool to choose from, they were able to put together a reasonable squad.

Jamaica have four players Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Daren Powell and Dwight Washington on the West Indies team, while about 17 of the island's best cricketers are playing league cricket in England.

The squad includes six players who have represented the West Indies in either one-day or Test matches, while two others have played first-class cricket.

Carlton Baugh, Jermaine Lawson, Jerome Taylor, Marlon Samuels are the players who have represented the West Indies at all levels, while Donovan Pagon has played two Tests and Xavier Marshall has a lone one-day international under his belt.

The squad: Carlton Baugh, Marlon Samuels, Donovan Pagon (Mel-bourne), Bevon Brown, Jermaine Lawson, Odean Brown (St. Catherine CC), Tyson Gordon (St. Mary), Gary Graham (Manchester), Alanzo Harris, Xavier Marshall (St. Ann), Nicarlo McFarlane, Jowayne Robinson (St. Thomas), Jerome Taylor (St. Elizabeth).

Meanwhile, Melbourne will face Mid-Island Cricket Club from New York in a practice match at Melbourne Oval today starting at 10:00 a.m.

Melbourne will have the likes of Marlon Samuels, Donovan Pagon, Carlton Baugh and Llewellyn Meggs in their line-up.
