'Too soon to tell at Long Pond'
published: Wednesday | April 27, 2005

Claudine Housen, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

CHAIRMAN OF the Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ) Livingstone Morrison has rejected the recent criticisms of All-Island Jamaica Cane Farmer Association (AIJCA) Chairman, Allan Rickards that faulty maintenance was responsible for the fatal accident at the Long Pond Sugar Factory, in Trelawny.

The accident, which claimed the life of 23-year-old technician Kajel Insang, and injured two other persons, occurred last month when a turbine exploded during working hours.

In rejecting Mr. Rickards criticisms, Mr. Morrison said the technical reports on the explosion have been prepared but are not yet available for public scrutiny.

"I cannot release the information to the public at this particular time," Mr. Morrison said. "There is an investigation that has taken place and the findings will be acted on in a swift and decisive manner. It cannot be a mob justice approach to treat a matter that is as serious as this."

IRRESPONSIBLE

Referring to Mr. Rickard's allegations, Mr. Morrison said they were irresponsible for someone of his position.

"We (the SCJ) regard (his comments) as just another in a series of intemperate and irresponsible comments from Mr. Rickards," said Morrison. "They cannot be fitting of a leader of a national association."

"Young Insang is dead, two other persons are in the hospital, workers in the factory are traumatised (and) to be saying to the nation, without investigation that some people deliberately did that is irresponsible," he said.
