MEMBERS OF the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) should be able to carry out their duties more effectively, with the recent acquisition of 100 new motor cars, 100 new motor cycles, and 150 all-terrain vehicles.
In his contribution to the 2005/06 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives recently, National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips said that the problem of a shortage of motor vehicles within the force has been addressed.
The minister disclosed that the motor vehicles and motor cycles were acquired at a cost of over $300 million in the last financial year. He added that another 100 vehicles would be added to the police force during the current year.
Dr. Phillips also announced that a tendering process had been finalised, subject to Cabinet approval, for the acquisition of 40 boats for the marine police.
The 150 all-terrain vehicles are now being fitted with accessories, the security minister said, and once completed, they would be handed over in a couple of weeks.
Most of the all-terrain units would be deployed to police divisions outside of the Kingston Metropolitan Region, the minister said.
