SIX UNIFORMED youth organisations each received $300,000 in subventions to support their activities from the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture (MOEYC) on Monday.
The organisations are: the Girls' Brigade, Boys' Brigade, Girl Guides Association, Scouts' Association of Jamaica, Young Women's Christian Association and Young Men's Christian Association.
In 2003, the organisations were given $30,000 while last year the figure jumped to $250,000.
A DROP IN THE PAN
Ohene Blake, director of the National Centre for Youth Development, said that although there was an increase in financial aid, his organisation recognises that the money is a 'drop in the pan'.
Mr. Blake was speaking on Monday at the presentation ceremony for subvention to youth organisations. This was held at the Kingston headquarters of the Scouts Association of Jamaica.
He noted that every young person in Jamaica should have the opportunity to participate in some form of organised activity during the course of their life, or else the society will continue to reap the kind of social
problems which it is currently experiencing.
