THE EDITOR, Sir:
OUR SOCIETY is often criticised as one with a take-take mentality. And in today's social climate where crime is rampant, respect for self and others is on the decline, and children, our leaders of tomorrow, are being neglected on so many levels, it is easy to miss the good that is being done.
There are those who, while they have certainly taken much, are giving back. Take the Excelsior High School graduating Class of 1980, for instance. Members of the class have embarked on Fund-raiser Reunion 2005 (October 13-16), in this our 25th anniversary year, under the slogan 'Giving Back Matters', to raise money to assist needy students at our alma mater defray the cost of education. For some, poverty is the biggest obstacle today to an education. If we can each reach back and help someone forward we can together relegate poverty to a manageable challenge.
This is a group initiative and anyone, within or without the Class of 1980, who wishes to participate and/or contribute to our cause may email me for information or visit our website (www.xlcr1980.org) which is currently under construction.
Good still abounds everywhere; even if one has to squint a little to recognise it.
I am, etc.,
