Selectors recall Hinds, Edwards

ST. JOHN'S, CMC:

FIT AGAIN Barbadians Ryan Hinds and Fidel Edwards were named Sunday in the West Indies' 12-man squad for the third Test match in the Digicel Series against South Africa, starting Thursday at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

In two changes to the squad for the second Test that the West Indies lost by eight wickets, Hinds, who had played in the Guyana first Test, returns from illness to replace batsman Donovan Pagon, and fast bowler Edwards is in for an injured Pedro Collins.

In a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) press release yesterday, Convenor of selectors Michael Carew stated that Collins has a slight back injury and that Hinds has fully recovered from his viral illness.

"We were unfortunate to lose the second Test Match but we look forward to be even more competitive in the upcoming match," Carew said.

PAGON'S GAME

The return of Hinds was widely expected as Pagon, his replacement in the Trinidad Test, had a miserable game, scoring 0 and 2 and also spilling an easy catch.

Meanwhile, Edwards looked lively, and fiery at times, as he advertised good form bowling for the UWI Vice Chancellor's XI against South Africa on Saturday n Trinidad.

He returned tidy figures of none for 38 off 10 overs with three maidens and did not bowl yesterday.

Edwards has been out of international cricket since last summer's Test series in England because of back problems and returned to first-class cricket near the end of the regional Carib Beer Series tournament earlier this year.

Squad: Shivnarine Chanderpaul (captain), Courtney Browne (vice-captain), Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Ryan Hinds, Dwayne Bravo, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Reon King, Dwight Washington.
