Peter was the father I never had - wife
published: Monday | April 18, 2005

Hawkins Nanton, Gleaner Writer

ABOUT SIX o'clock on Saturday evening, Avril Cargill received the heart-wrenching news that her husband was involved in a terrible accident. But as she prayed for his survival, a television broadcast broke the news that Peter, the former national midfielder, had died.

Peter Cargill succumbed to injuries he suffered in a motor vehicle accident after the bus in which he was a passenger crashed into a rock face just outside of Discovery Bay, St. Ann, about 5:00 p.m.

As she laments the death of her husband, Mrs. Cargill told The Gleaner Peter was her best friend.

"He was a real father, my best friend. He was my father figure. Even though he was just two years older than I am, he was the father I never had," said Mrs. Cargill at her Karachi Avenue, Mona, home yesterday.

The couple, who knew each other for 21 years, got married 14 years ago. The union produced two children: a son David, 10, and a daughter, Danique, eight.

Barrant Roy Cargill, the father of the late Peter Cargill, said he named his son Peter when he was four days old, because he wanted him to become a preacher.

"I said I wanted him to go around the world and tell people about God. Instead, he became a footballer. He became what Jamaica was looking for, a dynamic man in the football world. His life has touched people all over the world, even in Israel, and I am happy for that," said the elder Cargill.

Sharon McDonald, a family friend, described him as a jovial person, and a strict disciplinarian who always provided for his family.
