SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC:
LEADERS JAMAICA put up a fight with the bat to eke out first innings points on the second day of their eighth round match in the Carib Beer 2005 Cricket Series against Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.
Replying to T&T's respectable first innings total of 205, Jamaica scraped past their opponent's total thanks to a fighting ninth-wicket partnership between allrounder Dave Bernard Jr., and fast bowler Jerome Taylor.
The pair added a precious 55 to give the visitors a handy 33-run, first innings lead, after they had slumped to 179 for eight in the middle of the afternoon. T&T were 21 for one in their second innings at the close at Shaw Park.
ENTERTAINING KNOCK
Bernard struck three fours and two sixes from 80 balls in his entertaining knock of 44 to see his team sail past the first landmark of the match. Taylor contributed a solid knock of 35 off 38 balls including two fours and one six.
The Jamaicans had started solidly with two half-century partnerships at the top of the order. Captain Wavell Hinds hit the top score of 46 and fellow West Indies batsman Xavier Marshall scored 45 in an opening stand of 70.
After Marshall was caught behind off Emrit, Hinds and Donovan Pagon carried Jamaica to lunch at 81 for one.
After the interval, they completed a 64-run stand for the second wicket before Hinds gave a return catch to unorthodox left-arm spin bowler Dave Mohammed.
Following Hinds' departure, there was little substance or stability from the rest of the Jamaica batting until Bernard and Taylor arrived to transform the complexion of the game with their resolute batting.
Pagon was lbw to Mohammed for 37, while Brenton Parchment, Tamar Lambert, Carlton Baugh, Jr., Daren Powell, and Nikita Miller all fell for single-figure scores.
Mohammed was the pick of the T&T bowlers with four wickets for 66 runs from 23.3 overs, Emrit gave support with three for 32 from 15 overs, and Samuel Badree took two for nine from five overs.
Batting a second time, T&T lost Imran Khan caught close to the wicket off Odean Brown for eight, leaving Lendl Simmons, not out on 12, and nightwatchman Mervyn Dillon, not out on zero, to bat out the remaining time.
Earlier, T&T captain Daren Ganga was dismissed for the top score of 113 in his side's first innings, after they continued from their overnight total of 196 for eight.
