Accident claims two in Hanover
published: Friday | January 21, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU

TWO PERSONS died tragically and a third was injured and hospitalised following a motor vehicle accident along the Cousins Cove segment of the North Coast Highway in Hanover, on Wednesday night.

The dead persons have been identified as 39 year-old Keith Hylton of March Town and cosmetologist Dorreen Barnes of Lucea, both in Hanover.

A male motorist, who went on the accident scene just minutes after it occurred, described the crash as "really terrible".

"The woman was thrown into bushes, distance from the site and the man's head was cut off clean. I have never seen an accident like that," he said.

Reports from the Lucea police are that about 11:20 p.m. a Honda motor car was travelling towards Lucea from the direction of Negril when it lost control and collided with a motorcycle, travelling in the opposite path.

The cycle was being ridden by Hylton, with Barnes as his pillion rider. They both died on the spot.

The driver of the car was taken to the Noel Holmes Hospital and was later transferred to Cornwall Regional in Montego Bay, where he was admitted with head injuries.

"There was a second man in the passenger seat of the Honda, but somehow he miraculously escaped unhurt and the car was written off. He looked shaken up though," the onlooker added.

Deputy Superintendent Paul Stanton, commanding officer for Hanover, said that investigations into the accident "were ongoing" and that it is "most likely that the driver of the car will be charged" with manslaughter.
