THE EDITOR, Sir: AMIDST THE calls for legal abortion services, I am concerned that we have missed a graver principle of cause and effect.
The women who live daily with the guilt of their choice are quick to attest that life after abortion is far from easy and even warn against it. What shall we say then? Women must take charge of their bodies.
We are living in a society that has a high HIV/AIDS infection rate and one would think this alone would be reason enough for women to change their sexual behaviour.I say women because unfortunately, women are at a greater risk of contracting the dreaded disease and they have to grapple with the load, pun intended, of an unwanted pregnancy.
The fairer sex must wake up and realise they have the power and the right to choose not to engage in unprotected sex since the effects can be so devastating.Abortion is never a good method of birth control.
In addition to the physical and emotional trauma women suffer, a life has been callously snuffed out. Almighty God gave life and we are commanded not to murder.
Jamaica is largely a Christian nation, though our behaviour would say otherwise, and our laws are based on the teachings of the Holy Bible, which advocates life. For us to now sanction the murder of unborn babies would be to sink further into spiritual and moral decline.
I am, etc.,
