Letter of the day - It's our turn, young Jamaica
published: Friday | January 21, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS LETTER is an appeal to the young people of our beautiful nation. I too am a 23-year-old that strongly believes that it is time for us (as young people) to make that change our Jamaica has been long waiting for. We need to open our eyes to the opportunity that is staring us right in the face. You see a country of no opportunity and I see a country of a lot of opportunity.

There is a saying that goes, "when you are at the bottom the only way to go is up". Here is how you see opportunity,

1. Look for problems in our society (but don't stop there), create solutions to it, and turn it into a business opportunity.

2. Read - Read everything that you can get your hands on and at the same time see what ideas that are not in Jamaica, can potentially become a business opportunity.

3. Create ideas for products that can appeal to our people (the masses) that make their lives easier and more convenient - Think, Lotto, Patty, Phone Cards etc.

4. Aspire to be like many of our young business leaders in Jamaica. People like, Audrey Marks and Kimani Robinson have, in a time of little or no opportunity (as you all see it) found ideas/products/services that have created convenience and entertainment for all of Jamaica. How do you think they have become so successful at such a young age? It is their ability to see things (opportunities) that no one else can.

As an individual who has lived in two other countries outside of Jamaica (for school), I have come to the wonderful realisation that there is no country like Jamaica. Please do not be fooled by the imagery that is portrayed in North America. Keep in mind that in a country of 290 million people you are nothing but a number. At least in Jamaica you have a name that can be recognised from end to end. Why not work hard and be recognised for it than work hard and be a number.

As to the young people living abroad, keep your eyes open to ideas/products/services in your respective countries that can become lucrative business ideas in Jamaica. It's our time to shine!

I am, etc.,

JASON DEAR
