PNP ready for an early by-election
published: Friday | January 21, 2005

Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer

FEWER THAN 1,600 delegates will elect the president and vice-presidents of the People's National Party (PNP), at Saturday's rescheduled 66th annual conference at the National Arena.

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson is expected to be returned as president unopposed.

RESOLUTIONS

Speaking to reporters yesterday at the PNP's Old Hope Road headquarters in St. Andrew, party Chairman Robert Pickersgill said there are eight resolutions to be dealt with at the conference, which will impact on the work of the party in coming years.

Mr. Pickersgill also stated that in keeping with the party's constitution, following the conference, the new National Executive Council will meet on Sunday, January 30, to select the party chairman, deputy chairman along with the 11-member executive.

And reacting to suggestions from the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party of the necessity for a by-election in West Kingston which is now without a parliamentary representative following the resignation of Edward Seaga, Burchell Whiteman, the PNP's general secretary, said that was the prerogative of the prime minister. "We expect an early by-election and we'll be ready when it comes," Mr. Whiteman said.
