Barbara Gayle, Staff ReporterTHE JUDICIAL Services Commission has made two new appointments to the judiciary.
They are Justice Karl Harrison, who has been appointed to the Court of Appeal Bench, and Bryan Sykes, senior deputy director of public prosecutions, who has been appointed to the Supreme Court Bench.
Justice Harrison has been appointed in place of Justice Donald Bingham, who retired in October. Mr. Sykes, who acted on several occasions on the Supreme Court Bench, has been appointed in place of Justice Harrison.
The two were sworn in at King's House yesterday, by Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke.
Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla was also sworn in as an acting Court of Appeal judge. Senior Resident Magistrates Jennifer Straw and Almarie Sinclair-Haynes were sworn in to act as Puisne Judges.

Justice Harrison has gained the distinction of being the first Norman Manley Law School graduate to be appointed to the Court of Appeal Bench. In 1996 he gained the distinction of being the first graduate to be appointed to the Supreme Court Bench. He has acted in the Court of Appeal on several occasions and was acting there since January this year.
Justice Harrison graduated from law school in 1976 and joined the staff of the Attorney-General's Department. He worked there for five years and left as assistant attorney-general to act as a Resident Magistrate.
Justice Sykes, who is also a graduate of the Norman Manley Law School, was appointed a clerk of the courts in 1986. He joined the staff of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in August 1988 as a Crown Counsel. He was appointed assistant director of public prosecutions, deputy director of public prosecutions and subsequently senior deputy director of public prosecutions.
In April 2002, he had his first acting appointment on the Supreme Court Bench. He was appointed to act again in January this year and was so acting until his appointment last month.
