Morris captures top prize at the UWI Golf Classic
published: Friday | November 5, 2004

NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE Sean Morris carded a three-under 69 to capture the top prize in the 2004 Alliance UWI Golf Classic held last weekend at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.

Morris walked away as the overall champion and the seventh winner of the Vice Chancellor's Trophy.

Despite a low four handicap which is not usually an advantage in a Stableford format, he netted a total of 43 points from two eagles, two birdies and 11 pars to defeat 22 handicapper Richard Powell on a better back nine score.

Powell also received 43 points and was awarded first place in the Men's section. Second place went to Larry Lodenquai with 42 points, followed by Philip Leung with 41 points.

Defending overall champion Radcliff Knibbs defeated Tommy Lee with a better back nine to take fourth with 39 points.

Teddy Richards was the senior winner with 42 points while Dave Lyn (40) was second. Bruce Lyn, fresh from his recent win at the Jamaica Observer Classic, was the third-place finisher with 38 points.

LADIES WINNER

The Superseniors top prize went to Lanswell Gayle with 39 points followed by Bill Telling (39) and George Swire (36). The Ladies winner was Darnley Thomas (37) with Maggie Lyn (35) second and Anne Telling (35) third.

Nearest to the pin prizes were won by Maggie Lyn and Bill Telling, while Anne Telling and Carl Welsh took the Longest and Straightest drive prizes.

More than 100 golfers competed in the Alliance Investment Management Ltd. sponsored event including Damian Spencer - who was recently named by the JGA/UWI Golf Development Foundation as the first grant awardee from the JGA/UWI Golf Scholarship Fund.

The fund was established in 1998 after the first JGA/UWI tournament and was put in place to assist high academic achievers with proven golf talent but with limited financial resources to pursue a tertiary education at UWI.

Each year, proceeds from the tournament are deposited in the Fund which has about $2.3 million to date.
