We're all in the same boat
published: Sunday | October 31, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REFER to the letter of October 15, penned by an ex-member of Parliament, Ms. Heather Robinson, captioned "Life after Politics".

Ms. Robinson asks, which Member of Parliament or Minister of Government could state honestly that their salary received is able to pay their monthly bills.

I am of the opinion that it has not been the parliamentarians who have been in this predicament, but a whole host of government pensioners, which include teachers, nurses and policemen to name a few, especially those who have retired prior to 1991. To single out one category of persons is quite absurd and for her to choose the category that is treated so differently compounds the absurdity.

Parliamentarians enjoy favourable minimal service tenure requirements and the ability to serve after normal retirement age. Life after politics is no different from life after retirement, or should not be.

I am, etc.,

A.A. MCCREATH

Mandeville
