DaCosta Cup - Titchfield, Cornwall first into inter-zone round
published: Sunday | October 10, 2004

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

TITCHFIELD HIGH, last season's beaten finalists, and many-time champions Cornwall College became the first qualifiers for the inter-zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition yesterday following wins over Seaforth High and William Knibb respectively.

Titchfield secured at least second place from Zone L after a 1-0 win over the second-placed team at Carder Park while Cornwall won Zone A after their 3-0 win over William Knibb at Jarrett Park.

National Under-17 captain Omroy Whyte scored from the penalty spot in the 36th minute to run his tally to four goals for the season while Thio Daye in the 39th and Francoise Anderson in time added on gave Cornwall College all three points.

Two other schools, Clarendon College in Zone H and Godfrey Stewart in Zone C, just failed to clinch their berths and must wait for the next round of matches to secure their places in the 24-team group that is set to kick off on October 23.

CLARENDON COLLEGE EXTEND STREAK

Clarendon College extended their win streak to seven games with a 2-0 win over Kellits to increase their lead at the top of the group to six points over second-placed Lennon and need just a point or at least a draw by Edwin Allen to secure their place in the next round.

The Edwin Allen versus Claude McKay game was one of six that were rained out yesterday and will have to be rescheduled.

Godfrey Stewart needed three points from their Zone C game against Black River but had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw and they too must wait to clinch. Godfrey Stewart lead Zone C with nine points, ahead of Petersfield and Black River on six with Mannings on three.

Defending champions Frome Technical retook the lead in Zone B after a 2-0 win over previous leaders Grange Hill and former champions Rusea's are almost certain top be out of the running for a place in the next round after they went down 1-0 to Knockalva.

It was their third loss at home this season and they are firmly rooted at the bottom of the points table on four.

Shaunovan Wilson scored a hat-trick for Zone D leaders Cedric Titus in their 6-0 romp over Marcus Garvey High while Davin Williams bagged two and Lorenzo Miller the other.

Cedric Titus increased their lead over Brown's Town to five points as they went on to 23 points from nine matches.
