Giving credit where it is due
published: Sunday | October 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LET ME congratulate the Government, private sector and the other civic organisations on their efforts to restore some semblance of order to the country after the effects of Hurricane Ivan. This is in particular to the Prime Minister on his exemplary leadership which was displayed throughout the period.

However, where credit is due it is given and constructive criticism must be accepted in every circumstance. I am a bit perturbed that some parliamentarians are upset that they have not played a greater role in the relief effort. I think the relief team put in place can get the assigned task done without any form of assistance from parliamentarians. What we should be mindful of is that this road to recovery does not become an issue of political spoils.

The persons who were affected by Hurricane Ivan must be taken care of by the Danville Walker-led team, not some MPs looking political mileage. As a Jamaican citizen I could not even care if my MP wants to have a greater role in how the relief efforts should go but to give Mr. Walker and his team good support by identifying areas of his/her constituency that were severely affected.

Also, the public should be given clear cut information about how much money was collected from where/who and how it was spent on the reconstruction efforts. This would give greater accountability and transparency which is what we are looking for in our leaders. I wish Mr. Walker and his team success in their efforts to bring about normality and that we all work in unity.

I am, etc.,

DWIGHT BERNARD
