Incentives for retirees
published: Sunday | October 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM sure this idea has been mooted previously but nothing seems to have happened, so here we go again. Why not offer incentives such as low income tax rate or tax-free income to retired persons who can help in nation-building.

There are engineers in all fields from road and bridge building to mechanical and electrical fields. Scientists, medical personnel and others all retired and would probably choose to reside in Jamaica and give of their skills if the right incentives were offered.

These retirees would also be training our young and unskilled to be productive and at the same time help to pull the country up to a higher standard for our people. They could be Jamaicans, or not, in short anyone wanting to retire in a tropical setting. We would also have to build support facilities for these retirees and there we go again, more jobs for our people.

I am, etc.,
