George's drub Donald Quarrie
published: Sunday | September 19, 2004

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

ST. GEORGE'S College opened their 2004 Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup campaign with an impressive 5-0 drubbing of Donald Quarrie at Emmet Park yesterday.

Led by a double strike from substitute Kevon McBean in the 69th and 81st minutes, the Neville Bell-coached boys took advantage of an inexperienced Donald Quarrie team on their way to victory.

Kurt Raymond, who opened the scoring in the 13th minute, Christopher Johnson in the 37th and Dussen Palmer, a minute from time, scored the other goals for the 17-time champions.

In a one-sided match, St. George's boys were far more impressive in their ball possession, controlling and passing. Donald Quarrie's goalkeeper, Michael Campbell, showed some guts in goal but there was little else to cheer his team's supporters.

Despite getting the early goal from Raymond, St. George's had to wait on a goalmouth error to extend their lead. The goal came when Campbell failed to hold on to a header, which gave the unmarked Johnson an easy goal.

Bell, who guided St. George's to their last title in 1992, had mixed feelings about yesterday's game.

"We scored five goals, so we can't complain," Bell said. "I think we did a lot of things right, but we also need to work on a lot of things. We missed a number of chances, we gave away the ball more times than we should have, but it's a great start," he said.

Meanwhile, Donald Quarrie's coach, Owen Wright, said he did not have his ideal team.

"The team is very young. It is more like a Colts team. We are supposed to have a better team come next week because we have a couple guys who did not play today," Wright said.
