January to June - best six months in history
THE KINGSTON Container Terminal has recorded the highest volume of container moves in its history after achieving 114,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in July. The period January to June 2004 is also on record as the best six months in the history of the terminal.
At the end of the 2003/04 financial year, the Kingston Container Terminal exceeded one million TEUs for the first time and if the present trend continues, the terminal will handle more than 1.3 million TEUs for the financial year April 2004 to March 2005. The record number of TEUs in July has brought the volume of the current fiscal year to 416,000 TEUs.
REMARKABLE GROWTH
"These remarkable growth figures are indicative of the high level of confidence we have developed among our clients, the international shipping lines," says Noel Hylton, president and chief executive officer of the Port Authority of Jamaica. "We have been very aggressive in our marketing programme, but there has been even more emphasis in developing our facilities to meet new expectations, particularly with respect to security."
The Port of Kingston is certified compliant with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code. The port is ranked 63 in the top 100 ports of the world and the increase in usage expected to lead to an improvement in this rating.
