Horace Burrell to represent FIFA at Haitian peace game
published: Sunday | August 8, 2004

ALTHOUGH HE is no longer president of the Jamaica Football Federation, Captain Horace Burrell is still in and around the highest levels of world football.

The former Jamaica football boss, a senior vice president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and executive committee member of CONCACAF, has been appointed by FIFA president Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter and CONCACAF president Jack Warner to represent both football bodies at the historic peace game in Haiti on August 18.

PEACE GAME

Burrell's presence at the peace game between Brazil and Haiti, organised by the governments of both countries, will mean that Burrell will miss Jamaica's opening CONCACAF World Cup semi-final clash between Jamaica and the United States at the National Stadium set for the same day.

The match between the World Cup champions and Haiti, who made it to the World Cup finals in 1974, is aimed at promoting peace between the warring factions in the impoverished Caribbean island.

In an attempt to get guns off the streets of Haiti, patrons attending the game are required to turn in a gun in exchange for a seat.

Brazil have named a strong team for the game as it is coach Carlos Alberto Parreira's last preparation game ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Bolivia on September 4.

Burrell is expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince on the 17th and will head the official delegation meeting the teams. The president of Brazil and prime minister of Haiti will also be present.
