THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE INFECTION of corruption has been eating away at the bones of the moral fabric of our society. And while we would like to think that the legal fraternity which should be the backbone of that same moral fabric would be exempt from this infection, it has proven to be otherwise. The justice system has fallen into disrepute because of unscrupulous professionals.
Lawyers are men and women like anyone else. The line of training does not entitle them to different treatment. If others are subjected to personal searches at any point of entry, so should they. What would make a difference is if they all had impeccable integrity.
For lawyers to object to being searched when entering areas where it is quite clear that danger lurks, can easily suggest that they have something to hide or that they have some sinister motive. I am sure our legal representatives do not wish to be seen in this light. I would also like to think that they have the country's interest at heart.
So dear attorneys, if the cap fits, continue your protests. If it doesn't, fling it to hell and go 'hold' your search!
I am, etc.,
