If I were the Minister of Security...
published: Friday | July 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IF I were the minister with the portfolio for National Security, I would have my government set up adequate training facilities in all of the inner-city communities and in every 'nook and cranny' in Jamaica for those who want to upgrade or gain a skill.

I would give all those who are 18 and over an opportunity to make something of themselves. This would be mandatory. After age 18 you are either going back to school, working or learning a skill.

After that age, you are now an adult and you must contribute to society. After a two or three year period, any person who is of the age and is seen during regular working hours, who cannot give an account of where he/she works or which school or institution he/she attends, I would have the security forces take that person to Up Park Camp where he/she can become more useful to society.

I think, that system would identify those amongst us who wish to live as predators.

I am, etc.,
