THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A proud Jamaican living abroad, I am aware that there are a lot of Jamaicans who dread visiting the country for fear of their lives.
It is a known fact that the majority of Jamaicans migrate to various countries in search of what is commonly referred to as "a better life".
Jamaicans, however, whole-heartedly love their country and it is very embarrassing to say that most people will not return, not even for a visit, because of fear of becoming a statistic of the violent wave of crime that has overwhelmed the country.
Crime is a concern of everyone, so here are a few ideas of how to deal with the violence in the country. Jamaica is known to thrive on political rivalry. I am aware that the security forces are grossly underpaid and whether one wants to believe it or not, the future of Jamaica lies within the security forces' ability to bring the violence to a halt.
So then, the Government should increase the salaries of the security forces to a substantial amount as an incentive for their devotion in fighting crime.
Some will always crave for more money but a happy employee will always go the distance to get the job done.
I am, etc.,
