NCB gives $6m boost to Knox
published: Friday | July 16, 2004

By George Henry, Gleaner Writer

SPALDINGS, Clarendon:

THE MANDEVILLE-BASED campus of the Knox Community College, received a major financial boost on Wednesday, with the donation of a $6 million cheque by the National Commercial Bank.

The money, which was presented to principal of the institution Mrs. Elvris Hewitt-Buckle, by Winston Lawson, manager of the NCB's Mandeville branch, is in keeping with the financial institution's promise to contribute significantly towards the nation's education at the various levels.

Mrs. Hewitt-Buckle, on receiving the cheque, said it would be used to continue expansion work on the campus.

This, she said, was being done in an effort to increase the intake of students from the current population of 500 to about 1,100 when the new school year begins in September. She said further expansion could see the institution admitting as many as 1,500 students.

Mrs. Hewitt-Buckle said the timing of the partnership with NCB was perfect, as the needs of the institution are great. She expressed hope that the example being set by NCB would inspire other private sector companies to join forces with the college to give Jamaicans good tertiary education.

Mr. Lawson, speaking on behalf of the bank said the contribution would ensure that additional seekers of higher education could each year become a part of a culture of excellence. He said the contribution augur's well for the bank's drive to "build a better Jamaica".

He also took the opportunity to implore other organisations in Jamaica to either continue, improve or immediately implement programmes geared towards building a better Jamaica.
