Ammo stash found - 800 rounds seized at slain 'One Order' leader's apartment
published: Friday | July 16, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE POLICE yesterday reported the seizure of more than 800 rounds of ammunition at the upper St. Andrew apartment of Oliver 'Bubba' Smith, the slain reputed leader of the 'One Order Gang'.

It's reported that the apartment was rented in a fictitious name used by him.

"No weapons were found, only ammunition, but the police are still searching the premises," said Acting Commissioner of Police Lucius Thomas late yesterday evening.

Smith was shot and killed by gunmen on Monday night along Festival Road, off Whitehall Avenue in St. Andrew. The police have since seized the Honda Civic motor car that Smith was driving at the time of his death.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the registered owners of the car were Central St. Catherine Member of Parliament, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and Andrew 'Bunman' Hope, one of Smith's most trusted lieutenants.

Mr. Smith, who was deported from the United States in 2002, was wanted by the police for various crimes, including murder.

Ms. Grange stated publicly on Tuesday that she had no knowledge of how Mr. Smith came to be in possession of the vehicle. And, despite her name being seen on several documents related to the car, the Member of Parliament said her only connection to the vehicle was that she stood as guarantor to help secure a loan for Mr. Hope, a constituent, so he could purchase the vehicle.

But as the police continue to probe the connection between Ms. Grange and the slain gang leader, the Central St. Catherine MP was interrogated for more than five hours yesterday by detectives attached to the St. Andrew North Homicide Unit and the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) headquarters, downtown Kingston. Reports are that she was interrogated inside a suite at a popular Corporate Area hotel, in the presence of her lawyers - George Soutar and Abe Dabdoub.

ALLEGED JOINT ACCOUNT

The lawmen are also investigating reports of an alleged joint bank account between Ms. Grange and Mr. Hope. The latter was arrested last year in connection with a shooting incident, a matter which is still before the courts.

The powerful One Order Gang operates a multimillion dollar racket in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, extorting money from private business operators, transport operators and market vendors.

About a month ago, members of the gang attempted to expand their illegal network to May Pen, Clarendon.
