'Mind, Body and Soul' retreat set for June
published: Sunday | May 23, 2004

Barbara Ellington, Gleaner Writer

FROM JUNE 24 to 27, more than 60 women from the United States and Jamaica will meet at some of the most luxurious north coast villas for the fourth renewal of the 'Mind, Body and Soul' retreat. The much anticipated spiritual rejuvenation is the brainchild of Karen Clarke of 'An Elegant Affair'.

Since its inception, each year has been an improvement on the previous, as word spread about the sessions and activities that have been as thought-provoking as they have been helpful to participants. The retreat is for women only, and whether it's a pyjama party facilitated by a sexologist or relationship expert, or belly-dancing lessons, or poetry workshops, or excellent networking opportunities, sister-friends have always left feeling refreshed.

This year, Karen Clarke will once again surpass all expectations, as in addition to the much requested sessions, there will be something new and some special surprises. She told The Gleaner that having heard about the retreat, some husbands will be sending their wives and an extremely large contingent of sister-friends from the United States (including at least one Hollywood actress), will be in attendance.

"Some companies have also decided to send deserving female employees and prices remain the same as when we first started. The rates range from US $1,300 $1,700 for four days and three nights. There is also a discount if persons register early," Clarke said. All meals and ground transportation are provided in the package, which includes early morning workout sessions with a local fitness expert.

PRESENTERS

Mrs. Clarke revealed that confirmed participants so far are: Theresa King, motivational speaker and founder of Sisters Saving Sisters a women's ministry in motivation. King is the 2003 recipient of the American Business Association's 'Outstanding Businesswomen' award. Kaanun Walker is a relationship expert and the author of Winning in the Game of Love, Sex and Romance. Stacy Gibson is a celebrity make-up artist whose current project is the Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith hit television show, 'All of Us'.

Girard Smith is a fitness expert and the creator of the Art of Bodic fitness programme that is now being used by Reebok. Also confirmed is performance poet John Helmsley, who is no stranger to the annual retreat.

This high level team will be complemented by classes in yoga, pilates and spa services by a team from Ki Yara Ocean Spa.

Among the local sponsors that have so far been confirmed are: Jamaica Money Market Brokers, which will be making a presentation on financial wellness, and newly-appointed marketing manager for Pepsi, Denise Dixon, who will represent her company.
