In defence of Lee-Chin
published: Sunday | May 23, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN THE business section of The Sunday Gleaner of May 16, 2004, vice president of the Joint Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), Danny Roberts, is reported as speaking against a recent call by Michael Lee-Chin condemning the restrictive clause which limits his shareholding in Radio Jamaica to 10 per cent, inferentially referring to RJR as the media. RJR is neither the media nor a media, it is a medium in a highly competitive media environment, which environment did not exist when RJR was conceived and created, therefore, in all the circumstances, control of the media does not arise.
Mr. Lee-Chin must not be presented in a negative light to neither media workers, trade union movements, nor civil society. The gentleman should only be seen by all as a role model in the sphere of investment, generosity to the poor and love for his native land and gratitude in the superlative, as Canadians will attest. It doesn't surprise me that Mr. Lee-Chin is such a wonderful person, because he is the product of a wonderful and Christian mother.
Mr. Roberts should always emphasise the positive and in particular, hail great Jamaicans such as Mr. Lee-Chin.
I am, etc.,
OWEN S. CROSBIE
